Sy, 91, has been with the bank since 2012 when he was appointed director and vice chairman.

The legendary banker is credited for taking the bank owned by bilyonaryo Jacinto Ng family in 2013.

“His wisdom and insights on corporate governance, risk management and people and organization, contributed significantly to the performance of the bank’s Board of Directors,” AUB said in a statement.

Sy’s story is one for the books, having worked his way up from being a bank messenger for the local branch of the Bank of America to the C-suite level.

“More importantly, he was known for his genuine concern and care for people. A true gentleman, indeed,” AUB president Manuel Gomez wrote in a tribute. “We have nothing but respect and admiration for you, and we will always be grateful for your mentoring and inspiration.”
