A Babbler claimed the incumbent Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian was no fan of Yang.
The Babbler said this was the reason why Yang has reportedly limited access to the embassy compared to Huang’s predecessor, Zhao Jianhua.
“The Chinese ambassador doesn’t trust him (Yang), he has too much baggage and his alleged links to illegal drugs, smuggling and money laundering are just too much to ignore,” the Babbler said.
Xilian replaced Zhao in December 2019.
Yang has deep, personal ties with Zhao, who was Chinese ambassador in the country in 2014, according to President Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte has cited Zhao’s closeness to Yang to disprove allegations that his long-time friend was involved in illegal drugs and other criminal activities.
“Itong Michael Yang na ito kasama palagi kung makipagkita sa akin si(Chinese) Ambassador, ‘yung the previous one? Si Zhao (Jianhua), ‘yung na-transfer ngayon sa Indonesia…Kaya bakit ako magduda? Bakit ako magsabi na drug lord siya? Si Zhao ‘pag nagpunta ng Davao, doon natutulog sa bahay niya (Yang),” said Duterte in a briefing.
“You know, Zhao is a colonel of the People’s Liberation Army. He’s military. Will he allow himself (to be associated with a drug lord… Anak ng jueteng, sidekick ni Zhao ‘yang panahon na ‘yon. Tanungin ninyo si Zhao. ” Duterte said.
Duterte has known Yang for 20 years, saying he started out selling cheap cell phones to Davao’s market vendors and built Davao City Los Amigos store into one of the biggest malls in the city.
