He said login information of affected clients were likely stolen through phishing, or obtained through fake text messages or emails to harvest their personal data to gain access to online accounts.

“Tinitignan namin yung mga na-compromise na account… nakikita namin in all probability parang na-phish pa rin,” Lorenzo added.
BDO earlier admitted that the breach likely stemmed from a 10-year-old web service that it was about to phase out. It has committed to reimburse affected depositors.

Aboitiz-owned Union Bank of the Philippines has said there were at least six suspects behind the scam, which used newly-opened online bank accounts under the name Mark Nagoyo to receive the stolen funds from BDO clients which range from P30,000 to P50,000.
