The labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) is calling out Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi for being more preoccupied with politics amid the continued rise in fuel prices.

KMU staged a protest on Tuesday (October 13) to criticize the government’s supposed inaction over the rising costs of diesel and gas over the past seven weeks.

The militant group accused the government of sitting “idly” and refusing to “regulate market prices amid the economic and health crisis.”

Gasoline prices have gone up by P5.70 per liter since late August, while diesel saw increases of P7.40 per liter.

“It seems that Secretary Alfonso Cusi had been busy these past weeks. Pareho sila ni Duterte na bingi sa panawagang itigil ang oil price hike. Nagtuon ng pansin sa pamumulitiko at pagpapatakbo ng walang kwentang kandidato, pero walang atensyong ibinigay para kontrolin ang presyo ng langis,” KMU secretary general Jerome Adonis said in a statement.

The latest round of fuel price hikes coincided with the filing of certificates of candidacies for the 2022 elections, with Cusi being at the heart of one of two warring factions of PDP-Laban. Duterte made two trips to the Sofitel filing venue just to endorse his bets.

KMU urged Congress to step in to pass legislation to control oil prices, which it said have become unbearable for ordinary Filipinos to bear.
