One of the most respected Philippine bankers, Ramon Sy, has passed away. He was 91.

The chairman of Apex Mining and vice chairman of Asia United Bank died on September 16 after suffering a second stroke and kidney failure.

A source said Sy requested to leave the hospital in order to spend his dying moments at his home in the company of his loved ones.

Sy is well known for climbing his way to the pinnacle of banking, starting from messenger to president of Bank of America’s Manila branch. He was idolized by his employees and fellow managers.

The Far Eastern University alumni was also a director of SPC Power and president of Monte Oro Resources & Energy.

Sy used to be the head of United Coconut Planters Bank, International Exchange Bank, and BA Savings Bank. He served as vice-chairman of Metrobank. He also led the Philippine Dealing System Holdings and Bankers Association of the Philippines.
