The 176 units being recalled may have a tendency to lose their braking assist feature due to faulty engine management software. Improper use of the starter button and brake pedal could damage the engine’s vacuum pump, causing the engine’s crankshaft to rotate backward.

Toyota First Vice President Rommel Gutierrez said an increase in stopping distance could occur which could increase the risk of a crash.

“In line with its commitment to product safety and quality, Toyota has initiated a special service campaign for the vacuum pump on certain Toyota Supra models equipped with 3.OL engine…We will perform reprogramming of the engine control unit at no cost to our customers,” Gutierrez said.
