The 16 Filipinos on Forbes’ billionaires list saw their wealth jump by nearly a third to $52.6 billion in August 2021 from the previous month.
This is more than three times the 9.3 percent month-on-month surge in the Philippine Stock Exchange Index to 6,855 as of August 31.
Leading the pack of gainers is Henry “Big Boy” Sy Jr. who climbed up the rankings ahead of his two brothers – Hans and Herbert.
Big Boy’s climbed from No. 7 to third richest with a net worth of $3.6 billion in August, up by $1.3 billion or 56 percent month-on-month.
Big Boy consolidated his holdings in Synergy Gird & Development (SGP) in preparation for the backdoor listing of National Grid Corp. of the Philippines where he is vice chairman.
Another big winner is ports and casino tycoon Ricky Razon whose fortune soared by $800 million or 15 percent to $6 billion in August.
Razon’s International Container Terminal Services Inc. jumped to a new all-time high of P186.10 last month as trade volumes rebound to higher than pre-pandemic levels.
Razon sliced by half his wealth gap with the richest Filipino, Manny Villar, whose net worth was unchanged at $6.7 billion in August.
Only two of the 16 bilyonaryos suffered a cut in their pocketbooks last month.
Lucio Tan continued to see his wealth shrink for the second straight month as he has lost a total of $1.2 billion to $1.8 billion since July. Aside from the unabated bleeding of Philippina Airlines, Tan’s cash machine, PMFTC, is under threat from the influx of smuggled cigarettes. Tan has plunged to No. 12 from sixth place.
Property and liquor tycoon Andrew Tan lost $300 million or 10 percent to $2.6 billion which dropped him from No. 3 to No. 6 in the ranking.
This is a breakdown of the bilyonaryos’ net worth in August 2021:
1) Manny Villar – $6.7 billion unchanged
2) Enrique K. Razon – $6 billion up 15%
3) Henry Sy Jr. – $3.6 billion up 56%
